After Brian Epstein took over the reigns as The Beatles' manager, he was turned down by every record company he went to until his meeting with the A & R rep for EMI. Producer George Martin happened to be walking by the door and heard the demo tape Brian had. Martin liked what he heard and asked Brian to bring the guys in for a recording session.

But the demo tape had Pete Best playing drums and Ringo had only just joined the group. So Martin suggested that they use session drummer Andy White on the two songs they were to record. In a compromise decision, Martin recorded both songs with Andy White on drums and Ringo playing percussion, and also with Ringo playing drums. The British release used the Andy White versions with the Ringo sessions getting released in Canada and later in the United States.
