Biography: Matraca Berg

Despite a number of impressive attempts, Matraca Berg has so far been unable to claim the same success as an artist that she has as one of Nashville's most prolific songwriters. As a songwriter, Matraca has written numerous top ten songs for other artists, including Strawberry Wine, which launched Deana Carter's recording career, The Last One to Know, recorded by Reba McEntire, and The Wrong Side of Memphis, recorded by Trisha Yearwood. A look at BMI's database turns up more than 360 songs with Matraca Berg in the writing credits. Sadly, two of Matraca's albums never saw the light of day, one rumored to be canceled after it was already in production. Out of her own recordings, the best known are probably Lying to the Moon, That Train Don't Run, and Back in the Saddle (which drew some criticism due to its somewhat suggestive lyrics).
