Maciej Kossowski - CD Review

CD - "Nie Mowie Zegnaj," (I Don't Say Goodbye) Artist: Maciej Kossowski Released by: Polskie Nagrania, Label Muza

Analyses by Paul Tuller

Maciej Kossowski's records pack an extra kick that makes him instantly identifiable in a crowd of polish artists. His unique voice, over driving rhythms and musicality, has produced some of the biggest hits between 1964 and 1969.

Although he did not make new recordings after he left Poland in 1969, Polskie Nagrania, released his new album Nie Mowie Zegnaj with 22 songs on Muza label.

The CD is a compilation of songs previously recorded and released by Polskie Nagrania showcasing Kossowski's multiple talents as a: Vocalist, composer, trumpet player, arranger and producer.

On a new CD you'll find songs from the recordings done between 1964 and 1969. Many of them unforgettable and dynamic songs with Louis Prima's kind of groove written by Jozef Krzeczek and W. Patuszynski. Maciej's first record:

"Maciej Kossowski i Czerwono-Czarni (The Red Blacks) features following titles:

Agatko pocaluj, Dwudziestolatki, Nie zawsze musi byc pochmurny dzien and Szkolny Bal.

They are followed by splendid Dixieland tunes recorded with " The Warsaw Stompers:"

Augustyna, Za co mnie kochasz, Nie mow o zazdrosci, To przez ciebie.

The same CD has a selection from his record made with group "Tajfuny: "

and the song title: Nie pozwol mi, which is his first original composition written to the lyrics by Andrzej Tylczynski.

From the fourth record produced in 1968 with " The Studio Rytm Orchestra" we get his third signature song and possibly the biggest hit: Wakacje z blondynka!

Kossowski's singing and musicality shines in the song he composed and orchestrated:

To ty Mario (It's You Maria.)

The song reveals Kossowski's hidden deep sensitivities that echo love, loneliness and pain. Paradoxical perhaps . . . if one takes under consideration his many love affairs.

From the fifth record released after departure from Poland in 1970 we find three major hits:

Nie mowie zegnaj, Domowe strachy, and Z Cyganami w swiat.

Oczy ci zaslonie . . . one of my favorite on this CD with great lyrics by Zbigniew Jerzyna has terrific vocals and arrangement. Real R&B.

Another worth hearing song is a haunting and beautiful ballad:

Nie mowie zegnaj (I Don't Say Good-bye) with instrumental arrangement done by established jazz saxophone player Janusz Muniak.

The song has a powerful melody and pulsating jazz rhythm supplemented with "fuzzy" guitar solo played by Marek Blizinski and Maciej's attentive vocals. The song has few other renditions done by other famous colleagues: Katarzyna Sobczyk, Henryk Fabian and Jacek Lech.

Kossowski a versatile performer is equally at home singing ballads, fast swing, Rock and R&B. He moves easily from shuffle beat in Dwudziestolatki to romantic Nie pozwol mi.

His overnight success with "Czerwono-Czarni," in August 1963 comes as no surprise. By October of the same year the whole Poland felled under his spell.

It is only unfortunate that because of inefficiencies of Polish recording business his records were never pressed and distributed on time. Polskie Nagrania, a state run agency notoriously sluggish and bureaucratic, kept releasing records long after they received extensive overplay by Radio.

Polskie Nagrania also failed to use his best recordings on the current CD. A good example are two omitted songs:

Pokaz mi droge and Noc na drzewa sie wspina both with true musical value. Played extensively on Polish Radio but never pressed on vinyl.

The latest release of M. Kossowski's CD triggered revival of his popularity, Few of his songs shot to the top of the charts. Maciej Kossowski continues to put a stamp on Polish music, with his songs and inspired recordings. He has become one of the most important artists!
