User Reviews:

Audiogene @ The Bull & Gate, Kentish Town, July 29th 2003.

Audiogene are a great band with a history of hard touring and even harder, driving songs. They used to be called Bottlerockit (then My Bottlerockit) but the addition of Ozzie lead guitarist Dan Peterson last year resulted in a new musical direction and a new name to match. The other members of the band are singer/guitarist Johnny 'Rockit' Crawford, drummer Christian Finn and bassist Mark Bowater. Their music is loud, brilliant rock, which they produce without apparent effort. Unakin to anything I hear on the radio at the moment, it would, however, surely settle into mainstream DJ's playlists with the band's big break, which seems imminent since the very gig I am reviewing. It was a night where four bands played, Audiogene being the third, and it was also a night where some big industry people were checking out the minnows for anything that could make it big. As far as I'm aware, only Audiogene caught their attention and got a deal with Bob Grace. If you haven't heard of him, never mind. Anyway, it was the most blistering 25 minute set ever. They kicked off with 'Nothing Disease', a bass-led masterpiece. They give you no warm up. Be prepared to have your ears split at the start. Following on was 'Take Me Away', a grungy, edgy song with a (gulp) Nu-metal edge, but evidently a little Nu-metal doesn't ruin every song it comes into contact with. 'Cannonball'is a fantastic live track that displays the band's unending energy. 'Friday On My Mind' came next, originally recorded by the Easybeats in the 60's. Audiogene made no mistakes in modernising it. 'Not Beautiful' is a heavy song with a big verse-chorus structure in which Johnny laments his position in life - "I'm not beautiful, and I'm not loaded." They finished with what will be their debut single, 'Eyes Wide Open', a melodic track with some great backing singing from the other band members, but the slight change in tempo brings no reduction in energy or brilliance. Audiogene: kings amoung men. God bless you.

Audiogene Eponymous EP

This CD has four tracks on it: Cannonball, Take Me Away, Over and Out, and Remote Control. It also contains a video interview.

The first two tracks are fabulous. They're darker than the last two, and are quite rocky in the original term of the word (until rock started to be sliced into idiotic subgenres). Cannonball is fabulous, with a great guitar tune and heavy drum beats. Take Me Away is destined to be huge; Nirvanaesque, as I said in the gig review. It has a very heavy distorted guitar in the back ground, very eclectic. Absolutely ideal for drowning out nagging family members.

Over and Out is more nu-punky. The guitar riff in the centre is fab, but this is a little poppy for me. I do prefer the darker stuff. Remote Control is also poppy, but not as. This is a little happier, but completely meaningless, so all you angst ridden "moshers" probably won't like it.

Audiogene and Four Star Mary

Two words: bloody fantastic. The atmosphere was excellent, and the music was brilliant. It was the 15th November, 2002. Me and a mate went to see Four Star Mary at during their Welcome Home UK tour at the Roadhouse, Manchester. Eager, as they are my favourite band, first thing I did was to get a signable T-Shirt from the makeshift store at the back. Now, the place itself is the definition of a dive. Very small, very dirty, very...snug. God thing though- stage was just a metre away. Great! The support band were these guys called Audiogene. And they were great! Their music was sort of hard alternative. Each song had a different feel to it, a different vibe. Take Me Away and Cannonball were the definite best! Their EP was on sale after so I bought that. Take Me Away is destined to be a classic, very Nirvana-esque. Course, not as hardcore. But going that way. Anyway, fab music, great atmosphere. Just great. Cos.
