SXSW: I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness: Club DeVille, Saturday, March 15

In the blink of an eye, the patio at Club DeVille filled up just in time for the beginning of this chillingly precise set by locals that have chosen quite possibly the best name ever. Bathed in chilly blue light, the five young men went from zero to loud in 15 seconds, belting out dark, moody tunes that suggested the evil spawn of Bauhaus and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Plaintive guitars, rolling rhythms, and whispery vocals lulled listeners into a false sense of gloomy security, then wrenched them out of it with effortless tempo changes that opened up and rocked out. The band -- Christian Goyer, Jason McNeely, Ernest Salaz, Tim White, and Edward Robert -- are mostly small and fuzzy and look like models in their chunky, designer-looking turtlenecks and other black accoutrements. Pair the good looks with the superb bass bridges and trembly guitar effects and you've got future rock stars on your hands. The only drawback of the evening was the spillover noise from the showcasing band next door on the Privilege Patio, but it was only distracting in between songs and during quieter moments. Otherwise, it was a delicious treat to get lost in Darkness' airy atmospherics and a shame to have to come back down. Local success stories like Spoon and Trail of Dead need to make room for these boys; judging from the showcase attendance here and the quality of their performance, only good things can happen for this band.
