SPACE JUNKIES MAGAZINE INTERVIEW W/INNER SURGE
May 01, 2004 - Inner Surge Interview: Wednesday Elektra [Wednesday]: Hi! I was listening to both of your CDs the other day (Solus Verum and Matrika). They're very great albums. So how long have you been composing music and what are some of your influences? Steve Moore [Steve]: Thanks very much. I've been writing music for about 10 years and I have always been influenced by artists that strike me as honest. These include Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine, Dead Can Dance (I love Lisa Gerrard), Faith No More and The Doors, among many others. Lately, I've been influenced by a band called Refused, who have a very revolutionary approach to music. Wednesday: To me your music sounds a lot like the band TOOL, which I love because they're one of my favorite bands, they're music is epic in so many ways. What are your reactions when someone tells you that your music reminds them of someone else's work? Are you honored by it or insulted, why? Steve: It's fine with me, because we don't usually get the same comments by many people. Everyone perceives the music in different ways, and many times, people will compare us to bands I've never heard of, which is nice! A lot of bands out there today are either nu-metal, emo-hardcore, or old school metal, and we don't fit into any of those, so we get all kinds of comparisons. I don't mind at all, as long as people enjoy the music it's served it's purpose. Wednesday: Where did the name "Inner Surge" originate from? Are their any stories or "meanings" behind the name? Does it represent your music in any way? Steve: To me, it means inspiration from within, and that can and does apply to the music we create. I chose the name because it will apply in the future just as much as today. There is no measurement or limit...It's simply "This is what it is." When we share the music, we are sharing an energy. Sometimes, it's blunt and forceful, and sometimes it's soothing. Wednesday: I love the artwork you used on Solus Verum and on some of your websites, do you design the works? If so where do your ideas for them originate, if not, who's works are they and why do you choose to use it for your artwork? Steve: I don't design them myself, although I usually have a concept in mind. I choose artists who I feel can connect with the music and bring out powerful images. Winston Zhang is the artist for Solus Verum, and I have always admired his work. The new www.innersurge.com website and band logo was done by Joe Gaudet of Choice Chicken Productions. We wanted something simpler and more effective this time around, and we're very happy. Wednesday: Tell me a little more about Inner Surge - who's in the band, where are you based, etc. Steve: We are based out of Calgary, Canada. I write, and play guitar and vocals. Vince plays drums and percussion. Mike plays guitar, and we are currently auditioning new bassists. Wednesday: Do you get a great deal of positive feedback about your music? I think a lot of mainstream listeners would enjoy your works, do you feel the same way? Why/Why not? Steve: We have been overwhelmed by the feedback in the past. It has been very positive, and many people have helped to spread the word. I feel this music will reach many people, the main reason being that I think people are looking for honest music again. American Idol has had it's day, and I think people are looking for something more than a teenager singing a nice song. When I listen to music, I want to be moved. I want something revolutionary. I want something to change my world. We have different goals, and we are focused on achieving them. Wednesday: What are your plans for the future of Inner Surge? Are you planning on taking your music to the "next level?" If so, what is the next level for you? If not, why do you choose to stay at the place you're at right now in your career? Steve: I'm definitely planning on taking this music to the next level. Our goal is to reach as many people as possible, and we definitely have more people to reach. Our immediate plans are to begin preparing material for the 3rd studio album, which will be entitled "Signals Screaming," as well as plan a music video and tour. We'll be working very hard this year to progress as much as possible. Wednesday: When is your official website going to be unveiled? What types of things will it include? How will it be the same or different from any other website out there? What'll be the URL to it? In the mean time what other sites can people go to to check out your music or to find out more about you and your works? Steve: The official website should be unveiled any time now. I'm sure it will be up by late April. The URL is www.innersurge.com. What sets it apart is a custom jukebox, where people can download/stream 10 songs, five from each album. More will be added in the future, including live shows. There is also a mailing list, for those who want to keep updated. The main thing we wanted while building the site is for it to be easy to navigate, with lots of info, which I think Joe Gaudet (webmaster) achieved very nicely. Currently, people can find us through innersurge.com, because it will link directly to the mp3 site until the site launch. Wednesday: How can people purchase your music? Steve: People can purchase the music online at Inner Surge's funender store. The site is at www.funender.com/music/bands/40 Currently, "Solus Verum" is available, as well as the CrankSpiv Records Compilation CD #8, that features Inner Surge's "Beneficial Fever." "Matrika" will be available for purchase soon. Wednesday: What is your most favorite song that you've written? Why is it your favorite? Steve: I'm not sure that I have a favorite, but I feel that one of the most effective songs is "Our Rights." It says a lot politically about what is happening in the world today, typical as that sounds. It's a very aggressive song, but it's also intimate as well, and is communicating heart to heart/soul to soul. Wednesday: Do you have any upcoming shows or tours planned? What types of venues do you like to play at? Steve: We are planning to play the annual Alberta's Own Hard Rock Weekend festival in July, which should be great. We enjoy playing at venues that put an effort in and care about the shows. It makes a big difference, and they tend to draw a crowd that loves music. We hope to tour in late summer. Wednesday: Do you prefer to be a studio "band" or a live band? Why? Steve: Both...so far we are mostly known for our live show, but I feel it's because people hear with their eyes as well as their ears. Our live show tends to be very eclectic and forceful, and I think people are sometimes surprised by it. Of course, the songs have to translate well on CD, so we put a lot of effort into that. Wednesday: Do you have any favorite local bands or other bands you like to support? If so, who are they? Steve: I enjoy supporting any bands with a good attitude. It doesn't even matter if I'm a fan of their music or not. A few of my favorite local bands are Atumz Eve, Sittin' Idol, Johnny Incognito, the Failure and Gate. All of them are excellent, hardworking acts. Wednesday: Are you working on any new releases? If so, when is it expected to be released and how can people gain copies of it to listen to? Steve: Yes, we are writing material for "Signals Screaming." Recording won't begin until Fall, but we are releasing the packaged version of "Matrika" early summer and it will be available online. We may even release another demo in the late summer as well. Wednesday: How can people get in touch with you for more information? Steve: People can sign up for the mailing list at www.innersurge.com. Also, I always welcome people to e-mail me directly with feedback, questions, or just to say hi. My e-mail is innersurge@hotmail.com Wednesday: Do you have any other comments or information you'd like to share with the readers of Space Junkies Magazine? Steve: I hope you all enjoy the songs on the website, and thanks for reading my thoughts. We'll see you soon.Links:
