Crimson & Blue

July 12, 2003

This is the long-awaited rocker Phil's Glass Harp fans have been waiting for! There isn't a bad song on this disc. Anyone who likes good rock and roll will sing the praises of "Shouts of Joy", "Stone Eyes", the almost sarcastic and in-your-face "Doin' Nothin", the Compassion International anthem "Don't Pass Me By" and the remake of the old spiritual "John the Revelator". Beatles fans will ph'lip over the Abbey Road inspired "Love Divine" and "Reunion of Friends". Pop lovers will enjoy "Everywhere I Look", "World of Mine" and "All There Is To Know". Phil even adds a bit more flair to one of his more popular songs, "I Will Be There" (from Getting Closer, 1985). And everyone will love the bluesy remake of Van Morrison's "When Will I Ever Learn To Live In God" and "Nothin' But The Blood" will soothe anyone's soul.

If there's a minus side to this CD, it would be "I Will Be There". A remake from 1985's "Getting Closer" album. While this is one of the few songs from Phil that has ended up in a video, the redo, in my opinion, is the oddball tune of the disc. It's not a bad version, but it's certainly not the best on the CD.

Musically, this CD is outstanding. Phil teams up again with longtime friend and drummer John Sferra (Glass Harp) and producer Lynn Nichols (The Phil Keaggy Band) to produce a very strong performance. The whole album has a "live" feel. Guitarists will find no shortage of good "licks" here but there's also some very finely crafted lyrical content that ultimately brings us back to what really matters.

All in all, a fantastic disc no fan should be without.
