Bouncing to the Music
I bought this album after seeing Achinoam Nini (now performing under the name Noa) and Gil Dor in concert during a US tour around 1993. I play it often, generally at high volume, singing along. The songs are all in Hebrew, except for Pines which has an English refrain written by Noa herself, and Marionettes which has an Italian section. (Most of the songs are written by Leah Goldberg.) Everyone I've played the album for has enjoyed it, whether or not they knew a word of Hebrew.
I tend to enjoy the livelier tunes more than the slower ballads; my favorite tracks are Mizmor Laila (Keren Or), given the English title Nocturno on the album cover, He (Bo'i Callah), and Nisayon, with their combination of lush background sound and Noa's soaring vocals. I've also got a soft spot for Ilanot (Pines), whose English refrain "... but my roots on both sides of the sea" will ring true for anyone with a dual heritage.
