Biography: Pantera: Cowboys From Hell
1990 saw PANTERA's first major label debut, COWBOYS FROM HELL, unleashed by ATCO RECORDS. Videos for the singles CEMETARY GATES, COWBOYS FROM HELL, and PSYCHO HOLIDAY were often requested and aired on MTV's HEADBANGERS BALL television show. The band had much success touring as a support act to bands like SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, EXODUS, & JUDAS PRIEST. The band even played at the MOSCOW RUSSIA MONSTERS OF ROCK festival, along with such established bands as AC/DC, METALLICA, and THE BLACK CROWES. 1992 saw PANTERA release VULGAR DISPLAY OF POWER. This album produced the first ever heavy metal single to debut at #1, MOUTH FOR WAR. Videos were shot for the singles MOUTH FOR WAR, THIS LOVE, and WALK. Not only were these videos also shown on MTV's HEADBANGERS BALL, the show also used a snippet of FUCKING HOSTILE as the HEADBANGERS BALL theme song. Touring alongside MEGADETH, WHITE ZOMBIE, SACRED REICH, SKID ROW, and SOUNDGARDEN opened the band up to a broader fan baseĀ and also converted many hard rockers into full blown metal heads. #1 on the BILLBOARD album charts is where 1994's FAR BEYOND DRIVEN landed. It is without doubt, the most hardcore/heaviest CD to ever debut at #1 on the charts to this present day. With videos for singles I'M BROKEN, 5 MINTUES ALONE, and a cover or the BLACK SABBATH classic, PLANET CARAVAN, FAR BEYOND DRIVEN not only took PANTERA to the top of the metal world, but the tour which followed was awesome. Not even great bands such as TYPE O NEGATIVE, CORROSION OF CONFORMITY, PRONG or SEPULTURA could match the ferocity of PANTERA on the FAR BEYOND DRIVEN tour. 1996 saw the release of PANTERA"s most aggressive album yet, THE GREAT SOUTHERN TRENDKILL. Moodier songs like SUICIDE NOTE PART 1, 10's, FLOODS, & WAR NERVE saw the band explore new territory with a darker edge. A video was shot for the single DRAG THE WATERS. A massive tour package followed with the band headlining WAR OF THE GARGANTUANS with WHITE ZOMBIE, DEFTONES, & EYEHATEGOD. Eventually, the band coheadlined OZZFEST 1997 with BLACK SABBATH, MARILYN MANSON, FEAR FACTORY, and SEVENDUST. After countless years of touring, being included in metal festivals overseas as well as in the US, PANTERA felt the time was right to record a live album. 101 PROOF OFFICIAL LIVE emerged as a classic must have live CD for any metal fans collection. Featuring such PANTERA classics as SUICIDE NOTE PART 2, BECOMING, NEW LEVEL, and 2 new studio tracks WHERE YOU COME FROM and I CAN'T HIDE, 101 PROOF was a sigh of relief for those fans who had yet to see nor hear PANTERA live. It was also another chance for the band to tour, dominating summer amphitheaters with COAL CHAMBER, MACHINE HEAD, and ANTHRAX in tow. In 2000, after nearly doing everything and anything that a metal band can do, PANTERA unleashed what some call their finest work to date: REINVENTING THE STEEL. With REVOLUTION IS MY NAME and I'LL CAST A SHADOW as the albums two singles, the band once again proved that even though radio nor MTV gave the band much support, their fiercely loyal fan base was still intact. After making a video for REVOLUTION IS MY NAME, the band toured on OZZFEST 2000. Touring extensively on successful headlining arena tours such as THE REAL STEEL tour and THE EXTREME STEEL tour, the members of PANTERA are now taking a long and well deserved break to work on various side projects. A new home video is in the works for a late 2003 release. After playing shows with OZZY, SLAYER, SOULFLY, MORBID ANGEL, KITTIE, GODSMACK, DISTURBED, and STATIC X, the band has proved once again that their music is timeless by playing shows to the older and younger generation of metal heads alike. This category needs an editor
