The voice of Kurdistan
In a Valladolid bar, a Kurd, who has been living in exile for 20 years (first in France then in Spain) said the following : " When people don’t have a territory their language and their culture becomes their country. Sivan Perwer is the greatest artist the Kurdes have ever had. Our children learn to speak Kurdish by his songs, he gives a voice to our history and to our dreams. For all the Kurds, he is Kurdistan, stronger than our wretchedness, he is our pride." Our wager was that the 20 million Sivan Perwer cassettes distributed around the world would reveal much more than national pride and that his voice would not only be heard further afield than the Kurdistan borders but equally by others for whom his name represents just a TV news headline. An easy bet as the incredible strength of his voice has crossed all the deserts, the pure emotion evoked speaks for all the countries, all the languages, all ages. For his 24th album (the first to be distributed internationally), we invited Sivan to go for a live recording, an environment which we considered would allow his charisma and artistic talents to burgeon. Indeed, his performance that sultry summer’s night at the Langon Festival, accompanied by the greatest musicians of the Kurdish Diaspora, proved that his virtuosity could go far beyond our greatest expectations: the public were mesmerised, completely seduced. For the Kurds, who have a less-partitioned approach to their music than the West, Sivan could be said to globally represent Pavarotti, Ferré and Goldman. His artistic talent and choice of repertoire illustrates this diversity – from classical Kurdish plaintives to protest songs and dance music. Stronger than a "Best of ...", this recording explores 25 years of exile. By means of his songs, Sivan Perwer has become, over a quarter of a century, the incarnation of a people.Contributor organisation: Daqui Production
