Biography: Introducing Singer/Songwriter Moulann

by Christine Miguel Versatile and multi-talented, 22-year-old singer/songwriter/pianist Moulann is the new upcoming artist to watch out for. Her sincere lyrics and smooth vocals keep you hanging onto her every note, every word, every breath. Born in Taiwan and raised in Toronto, she started taking piano lessons at the age of five. After winning several awards and scholarships from local piano competitions, she went on to become a national finalist in the 1994 Canadian Music Competition and also placed first in 1996 Toronto Symphony Piano Competition, Senior Solos. Although it was actually years earlier in 1993 where she realized she had a talent for composition (after winning an honorable mention from the Amadeus Choir for her entry in their Christmas carol writing competition), what finally lead her to the recording studio was the sudden need to find a creative outlet for her personal experiences and emotions. Her debut album, Introspective, was released in September 2002. Before the album's release, her songs on MP3.com have already charted and still hover around the top 5 spots. The infectious drum and bass club anthem "Dancing on a Cloud" topped Canada's Drum and Bass charts at #1 for over two months. On Grooveasia's English charts, her first pop single "Stressed Out" climbed to number #1 and her latest ballad, "1,000 Dreams" remained at #1 for three consecutive weeks. But Moulann's talent exceeds the boundaries of the studio setting as she astounded audiences during the Fall of 2002 as an act in Yellow Fellow Clothing Company's Cafe Crawl series. Accompanied only by a Yamaha P-80, she belted tune after diverse tune of originals, covers and new material easily switching from English to French to Mandarin. Other live performances included sets with several bands as well as improvised freestyle vocals over drum and bass. Her love for music spans all genres and can be heard in her approach to her own work. Having written in a myriad of styles from classical to rock; RnB to country; mainstream pop to underground electronica, such varied and well-rounded talent is rarely seen. Open your ears and take a listen to Moulann, see if you like what you hear.

Biography: THE CHEATERS

The Cheaters formed back in '97 as four buddies trying hard to fulfill their need for raw, stripped down rock heavily influenced with the punk rock roots they grew up listening to. Along the way other genres of music began to be evident in what they did! Surf , rockabilly and metal to name a few. All of these influences helped them to define a sound unique to The Cheaters! Pablo Cheater, Pancho Cheater and Nathan Fabulous have been the core of The Cheaters since the beginning, adding Darren ( I don't have a cool name yet!) Means recently to take up the bass duties! As a two guitar band the sound is as heavy as you would expect, yet filled with subtle pop hooks and intricate thought provoking lyrics. A rock solid drum beat from Pancho buckles everything down and keeps their heads bangin'! The Cheaters songs are as original as their sound to keep things interesting. Long live Rock-n-Roll is the motto the band lives by and they do their best to fulfill that obligation! The Cheaters play hard, fast and fun just like you so give 'em a listen! You'll be glad you did!

First live show Borderline kerrang sponsered show with PIST-ON The band's debut album was released in March 99 on Peaceville Records. The album, entitled 'UNDEFINED' was recorded and mixed in Bristol at the bands own studio STATE OF ART. The title was inspired by whenever the band tried to describe their sound to people...Indefinable as it may be, the musical style is very dark and heavy. A head on collision of heavy riffs and enough machines to blow up a planet! Guest musicians contributing to the album include GIZZ BUTT – (the then) Prodigy guitarist and JANUS STARK front man. BETH GIBBONS, vocalist with PORTISHEAD, put in a very rare and haunting appearance on "Never Forever". 1999 was a very busy year for the band; in April they supported PITCHSHIFTER on their sizable UK tour, winning many new fans and positive press reviews along the way. A support slot closely followed with PARADISE LOST on their UK club tour. The band sealed their notoriety in 2000 by providing the soundtrack to a Channel 4 documentary on swingers! This was followed by a whistle stop tour of Holland, again with a Channel 4 film crew in tow. This was screened in summer 2000. The band have just finished the follow up to Undefined called Audio Manifesto and sees the band stripped down to a three piece of Shaun, Rob & Joe. Early listens expose a new forward thinking style, dripping with their own dark brand of Bristol edginess. Rick Dowling, famed for his work with Portishead / Massive Attack & William Orbit joins the band for joint production duties, with guest musicians from Massive Attack and Reprazent helping out. Audio Manifesto is scheduled for a worldwide release in June 2002.

Biography: the Sylmarillion

BIO: The Sylmarillion Genre: Alternative The Sylmarillion are a youthful and attractive foursome, their sound is original yet catchy. It dares to rock without shrieking and the topics are well pondered. They can get as hard as metal without the anger and their energy doesn’t smother the element of voice. Their live performances are rock spectacles, the band comfortably owns the stage as though they have always existed there. They are a new breed of rock band, their sound mixes early-90’s grunge-pop sensibility with an authentic taste of early 70’s glam. Founded by lead singer/guitarist Tim Riedel, the band includes former Mr Bigglesworth Drummer Chris Muller, guitarist Danny McKenzie, and Doug Grabowski on bass. Formed in 1994, the Sylmarillion remained in the basement until 1998 when they broke into the Canadian alternative scene with a 3-song EP, with each song from that EP charting on University radio charts. The band spent the following years growing their fan base and expanding on their exposure through touring and internet marketing. The band has obtained a unique success through various promotional activities that included providing music for WAME online games and appearing in educational short vignettes for kids with Eddy the Eco-Dog aired across Canada on YTV and Teletoon. 2003 sees the release of a full-length studio album for the band. Biography: R. Weis -- Sound Manipulator

R. Weis began his creative career in 1982 after moving from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to New York City. His earliest expressions took the form of poetry and monologues which were heard at venues such as The Poetry Project, La Mama ETC, and on WBAI FM National Public Radio. At that time, Weis also began experiments with manipulation of pre-recorded sounds on cassette tape, and began assembling sound collages to be presented with his creative writing. Eventually, his focus shifted away from writing, and moved enthusiastically toward the idea of composing with manipulated sound. He began working on a sampler in 1990 and embraced the discipline of composing exclusively with samples of original sounds. A series of collaborations began, and resulted in sound scores for film, visual art and dance. These collaborations were presented at many of New York City’s downtown venues, including Performance Space 122, Danspace Project, and the gallery Art et Industrie. In 1994, he collaborated with photographer Arthur Tress and composed the sound score for the installation “Requiem for a Paperweight”. “Requiem” was originally presented at University Art Museum, California State University Long Beach. It has since traveled to The Bridgewater/Lustberg Gallery in NYC, to German museums including The Ludwig Forum – Stadt Aachen, and in slide-show form at the CMJ Music Marathon in NYC. The sound score for “Requiem” was also heard as part of Arthur Tress’ retrospective “Fantastic Voyage, Photographs 1956-2000” at The Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. After 16 years in NYC’s East Village, Weis moved to the California desert. For the last three years, he has been working on a composition called “noitatu MovE oveR” which is a meditation on the structures of the universe. The 29-minute composition is organized like the DNA double helix, and is made from only 6 original samples: 4 to represent the 4 elements in DNA; 1 to represent whole numbers; and 1 to represent prime numbers. After such a long immersion in this cosmic project, Weis was delighted to accept an invitation from The Savannah College of Art & Design to compose the light-hearted “Dog Choir” for the exhibit “Pour l’Amour des Chiens” at the Mona Bismarck Foundation, Paris.

Biography: Ivy Benson and her All Girls Band 1939-1982

Ivy Benson was born in 1913, in Holbeck, a suburb of Leeds, West Yorkshire. She was a very accomplished musician on electric organ, piano, saxophone and clarinet, and led a renowned all girls band for over 40 years. The interest in music came from her father, who played various instruments in the Leeds Symphony Orchestra and other smaller ensembles as diverse as theatre pit bands and a musical comedy group "The Ten Loonies". Under his careful tuition Ivy learnt to play the piano from the age of five; by the time she was nine she was performing on the BBC's "Children's Hour", and in local working men's clubs under the name of "Baby Benson". Her father had greater ambitions for his daughter, wanting her to become a concert pianist; however preferred the more popular music and progressed to the clarinet and alto saxophone. In her early teens she won a scholarship to the Leeds College of Art, but then moved on to work in the Montague Burton tailoring factory, continuing to play at social and dance events in her spare time. After spending 3 years with Edna Croudson's Rythmn Girls she toured with Teddy Joyce and the Girlfriends, and in the late 1930's moved to London where she soon formed her own small groups. In 1940 the nine piece "Ivy Benson and her Rhythm Girls was formed for an all girl revue "Meet the Girls" starring the comedienne Hylda Baker. During the second world war she fronted a number of various sized bands, from 12 to 23 piece, sometimes with a string section. She recruited most of her brass players with the help of Harry Mortimer, a leading figure, a cornetist and conductor in brass band music in the UK. Many of the existing male band personnel were then involved in the war leaving many opportunities for Ivy and her girls to become establish; she played leading ballrooms and theatres all over the country, a high point being a 22 week stint at the London Palladium with top acts such as comedian Max Miller and Jimmy James, and piano duo Rawicz and Landauer. In 1943 the band was appointed the BBC Resident Dance Band, which created great anger and outrage among other leading male band leaders, notably Billy Ternant. However, she had one great supporter in Joe Loss who stood by her throughout her career. The war created another difficulty for Ivy which became a major problem to her during the war years - the influx of American GI's. Ivy was to lose many of her girls to romance and marriage, and on some occasions had been known to lose a complete section overnight. Over 250 girls played with the band during it's 40 year life, some starting from the age of 15 years of age, with Ivy being employer, musical trainer and, as one of the girls reported "the mother hen looking after her young". She was a strict but fair boss, but with such a large group of young girls to control and take responsibility for, she would sometimes need to use the strict side of her nature, keeping the girls in line with her signature tune - "Lady be good". In 1946 Ivy Benson and her Ladies Dance Orchestra were booked for the first post war broadcasts on BBC Television, but was forced to withdraw after the Stoll Theater group, fearful of the repercussions of this All Girl phenomenon, threatened to cancel her contracts. Not to be out done, she began her first tour of Europe, taking the girls to Berlin with ENSA, shortly after the Allied Forces had liberated the city. This was the start of extensive tours of the American bases in Germany. One of the highspots was a concert with Josephine Baker in Bavaria and in 1960, Ivy was playing at the Lido, Hamburg, during the time the Beatles were at the Indra Club, just across the road. The band survived the radical changes which were to affect all large bands from the 1950's; increasing costs and changes in the publics demand for modern popular music altered the music industry for good. Ivy adapted her style, focusing on the nostalgic sounds of the war years. She began to do summer seasons, and the Isle of Man proved to be one of her most popular locations, with up to 6000 in her outdoor audiences in the Villa Marina Gardens. The Sex Discrimination Act of 1975 caused Ivy to change the name of the band to Ivy Benson and her Showband. She had, on occasions, to field the odd application from male players, but would say they could have the job if they could get into a dress size 10-16! By this time the great days of live big band music was gone. The variety theatres had closed and dance hall were now Discotheques. During its last years, the band played mainly at private functions; show woman to the last, the final gig was at London's prestigious Savoy Hotel in 1982. Ivy continued with summer seasons for a while but retired to Clacton-on-Sea, where she worked tirelessly for the charity "Age Concern". She had confounded critics who said the girls could not sound as good as a man's band, and outlasted most of them. Ivy Benson passed away in May 1993. Biography: A Prize Worth Killing

Early winter of 2002 A Prize Worth Killing hit the Orange County music scene. This fashion rock band, centralized in Huntington Beach, CA, is comprised of members Brent Fiege (guitars), Mike Desmond (vocals), Bobby Mayorga (drums) and Mark Johnston (guitars). Their original music is driving emotional guitar rock with introspective and revealing lyrics about life's inevitabilities and uncertainties. They tap into a seemingly inexhaustable supply of energy and emotion both in their live performances and in their recordings. A Prize Worth Killing has a unique sound and tremendous versitility. They hearken back to their metal upbringings, and blend it with their own taste of acoustic rock. While much of today's "emo" music is known for being heart-wrenching and and angst ridden, APWK's music reflects the maturity and introspection of its members, who all contribute to their writings. They still, however, manage to perform with genuine emotion for their music and for the inspiration behind it. We will undoubtedly be hearing from A Prize Worth Killing in the future.

Biography: SCULLSOUP

Scullsoup is a blend of ska, hardcore, punk, and a whole lot of “what the hell was that?” - Think Primus, Bad Brains, Fishbone, Bad Religion, etc. - energetic, modern, and unmistakably original - all directions at once. Granted most hardcore punk music does not come from a sterile environment such as the rural southeast - its traditionally more of an urban inner city product. However, the mind numbing boredom of such an isolated existence has created Scullsoup. Lead singer, Vanbuscar, can be likened to a knobby kneed Rollins rolling around onstage. Lyrics about everyday life, full of satire and wit, are delivered with a gritty and almost rap-like attitude. Visine’s guitar wizardry is a variety of styles meshed into chaotic chord progressions and intense confident leads. POOPs’ aggressive bass sound has machine-like precision and subsonic resonance while Tartool’s drumming drives the band into overdrive like a rhino on crack. Formed some years ago and now grown to maturity - they have shared the stage with notable acts such as Public Enemy, Everlast, NOFX, and Southern Culture on the Skids - Scullsoup are blowing the minds as well as ear drums of every crowd they play for. “Scullsoup reminds us that real rock is still alive in this world of generic over produced shit.” 94.3 FM Extreme Radio; Knoxville, TN “Being fond of mayhem, I would have to list it as one of the best shows of the year” Tom Tollison; Knoxville Daily Beacon

Biography: Citrus - Acoustic Rock with a Fresh Folky Edge

Citrus is an acoustic 3-piece band based in Sydney, Australia. The band’s primary aim is to encourage Christians to continue growing in their faith and relationship with God. This is followed closely by a desire to share the gospel of Christ in an honest and genuine manner. Citrus is: Alison Head – Vocals and Acoustic Guitar Susie Bower – Vocals and Percussion Tim Bower – Acoustic Bass and Vocals While Alison fills the role of lead vocalist, all three members take an active role in songwriting and arrangement. As a result the songs are varied, coloured by an eclectic mix of rock, pop, folk, jazz and classical. In a genre at risk of cliché, the music of Citrus is fresh and inspiring. Citrus performances have included:  The Australian Gospel Music Festival, Queensland 2003  Black Stump 2002  Australian Christian Artists’ Network Musicians’ Breakfast  Gracenotworks.com Unplugged  Whitfest  Live radio appearances  Numerous performances in café, concert, and church settings Early in 2003 Citrus emerged from the studio with their debut album, Adam Ate the Mango. The 11-track album was launched at 3 concerts across Sydney in March and April 2003. Adam Ate the Mango utilises both unique and conventional instruments to present an ageless message of hope in a less than perfect world. The album was recorded and mixed by Greg Dixon at Aphek Studio, mastered by Don Bartley at Studios 301, and produced by Tim Bower and Greg Dixon. Tim has played with numerous bands, including Third Wheel who recorded their EP 'Scratching the Surface' in 1999. When Third Wheel went their separate ways, Tim saw the opportunity to join with Susie and Alison who developed their harmony-laden vocal style growing up together as sisters. Citrus was formed in early 2001. For more information, please visit http://citrus.lovesmusic.com

Biography: Mr. D-Note

Mr. D-Note Biography September 3,1975 was the date that started the life of another ghetto confused child. Raised by his Mother and Grandmother Mr. D-Note grew up in Fresno, CA. encountering mischief galore. Unfortunately in a city like Fresno, there are only a few things for a young black male to engage in and the biggest entertainment value for Mr. D-Note was trouble. With his father over 500 miles away; the main role model for Mr. D-Note was his 2 older brothers. One brother being a local gang member and neighborhood dopeman, and the other a self-proclaimed pimp. Mr. D-Note had the best of both negative worlds as he indulged in them to the Fullest! From playing between women and petty drug sales the only thing he truly cared about was getting enough change to help his mother pay the bills. Unfortunately all this came to a screeching halt when the death of his mother led him to a fork in the road. There was a choice to be made of either growing up to be a man or letting his life go out of control. Would it be a life enduring jail sentences or an early grave? At this time he was taken into underground radio and gangster rap listening to artists like 2pac, Dr. Dre and more as he played the best of the worst through the airwaves. This is where his life would change forever. In order to fill a need in the community Mr. D-Note developed a Sunday morning gospel program. Being in a room for a 3-hour shift listening to Gospel Music just does something to the spirit and it changed a gutter child to a child of grace. After hours of Kirk Franklin, True II Society, and other Gospel Jams working on how bad he was living his life he soon accepted Christ into his life and is now spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ through G.A.N.G.S.T.A (God’s Anointed Now Generation Spreading Truth Anyway) Rap. Mr. D-Note’s new release, “Dramatized,” proves to be a testimony of the sights, sounds and mayhem that he has experience through life. Like Clint Eastwood the, “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly,” comes out on this album and it shows how he was delivered from it. It also possesses tools for those experiencing the cold reality of today’s street life and a way out through Jesus Christ!

Biography: Eddie King / Pray For Reign - Bio

Eddie King - Acoustic, Electric Guitars / Vocals I started playing guitar in 1973. My early influences were Jeff Beck, Santana, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Johnny Winters, Stevie Ray Vaughn & Jimi Hendrix. In my formative "Jazz" years it was George Benson, Earl Klugh, Al DiMolia, & Pat Metheny. Then came the Speed Metal years when I discovered Tony McAlphine, Vinnie Moore, Blues Sarenceno, and pretty much anyone on Shrapnel Records. By the late 80s and early 90s I was more into The Edge & U2, The Cure, Tears For Fears to name a few. Tom Righi was a major influence as my only teacher for a number of years. When learning "cover" tunes he always taught the signature riffs but never the entire song note for note impressing upon me to improvise through a solo in order to have influences but yet making my own voice on guitar. This was the most influential lesson I ever learned as a developing and "still" developing guitar player. The creation of the group Pray For Reign has been a life project in the making. When I first decided to do only original christian music and begin a life of service to God. I had to part ways with a lot of people who had been friends of mine for some time. The decision to follow God's calling pretty much cost me my band (at the time) and the relationships that were made in those years with the band. People literally rolled there eyes when I said I wanted to do christian rock. Well I now found myself starting over from scratch in musical circles and it took me almost two years to get Jack Shelton as a bass player. I kept begging him to join with me and make the band possible. He caved into my constant pleads and "finally" joined the band and has not only been the best bassist one could hope for but also has become a great friend in the process and a mentor in my walk with Jesus Christ. My life long friend Charlie Denmark who was my bass player for about a million years now stepped up to the plate as rhythm & lead guitar player. Charlie has been with me since I can remember and we have been in so many bands together its not funny. Charlie has been there through thick and thin and even in poor health he stays by my side. If a person goes through his/her entire life and only has one friend like this then that person has truly been blessed. Jeff Hand is the ground. What I mean to say is when things get all crazy Jeff is the voice of reason and brings our feet back to earth. Two words can describe his playing. We call him the "The Machine" or the "Human Metronome" Jeff never misses a beat and his timing is phonominal. I sometimes hate his ability because it amplifies my own inability to count. Jeff is by far the best drummer I have ever had the pleasure of having. The first time I ever heard Meredith Mason sing I was amazed by her voice. When I finally got around to asking her to sing on the CD the band was really taking on its own sound. Meredith was so easy to work into the line up it was like having an old friend over for a visit. Her ability to pick out pitch and make corrections on the fly and to be able to emulate style even down to vibrato, which is no easy task, never ceases to amaze me. Meredith came out several evenings to sing with just a last minute phone call, and never having heard some of the songs, came though as the true professional she is. These next two people although not actual members of the band are nonetheless major components to our existence. Mike Sirmans aka "The Mad Scientist" (extra guitar in Pray For Reign) and Gary Kitchens (adlib vocals on Be Glorified) of the band R.O.C. Band (Rock Of Christ). If it were not for these two guys Pray For Reign's first CD would still be a "someday" dream. Mike is an awesome engineer, as well as guitarist par excellence, and he literally spent hundreds of man hours at the controls of the studio. In addition we were blessed to have Gary's excellent ears and input for the mastering of the self titled CD. Mere words can not express our gratitude for these two people whom God has placed in our path to help in this musical journey.

Biography: DJ Kila

DJ Kila is a west-coast bred house battle-bot. Spending the 90's in the warehouse parties of Vancouver, Seattle, San Francisco and L.A. has given him an awareness as a DJ and producer as to exactly what sounds good. His key influences would be the mighty Tony Senghore, Ralph Lawson, Jay Tripwire, Jason Hodges, the city of Paris, the beaches of Fiji, 20/20 Vision Records, DVD-enabled hot tubs, and most importantly, all the West Coast and German househeads who have provided him with the tools and inspiration to rock it. Most recently he returned from an Asia tour which included a residency in Thailand. Currently he is living, producing, and DJing in Hamburg as part of the so-called "Canadian Invasion" of Europe, which involves squads of lumberjack technical housers showing up and making Europeans lose their shit on the dancefloor. Although tearing it up in a a dirty warehouse for people is his favorite, you will occasionally catch him playing at a bar if people aren't wearing undershirts.
