Purpose of This Document

This document was prepared to assist in the standardisation of nomenclature across the Project. The Open Music Project contains a highly cross-linked dataset, and a standard set of terms significantly reduces the effort required to create and maintain these cross-links. Because of this, it is important that editors use consistently the terms below whenever the data which they are handling fall under the scope of one of the lists presented in this document, provided that the appropriate list contains the necessary term.

These lists are not designed to be exhaustive, and editors should expect to find missing terms in these lists. When an omission is discovered, editors should decide if the term merits inclusion in the list and inform the list maintainers.

Editors are not expected to have this document memorised, but should use it as a reference, as needed. Occasional, inadvertent use of an incorrect term is not a serious offense and it was not the intention of staff when creating this document to make editors paranoid about choosing the "one, correct word." However, when editors do run across instances when these terms can be used effectively, either in preparing new material or updating old, it is always preferable and appreciated when this is done.

Maintenance of the Lists

Although staff have prepared this document, and are ultimately responsible for its maintenance, it is assumed that the editor community will be responsible for the future growth, development and management of the lists contained herein, as well as the introduction of new lists whenever needed as the Project evolves. An ongoing discussion should be started in the Ontology forum about the maintenance and development of these lists. Staff will monitor this discussion and update the lists as necessary.

The list presented below gives the preferred term along with the category associated with each role. At some time in the future, these categories will be linked to the corresponding role.
