Ruby vs. America : Controversy Runs Amuk

The summer (2004) marked my first trip back to Egypt in 4 years. After living in America, coming home was a huge relief. I was anxious to also here the new faces in the music industry; so much can change in that long of a period. My first instinct was to switch on Melody TV and I listened to songs such as "Bahebak Mout", the famous "Ah Wi Noss", etc. etc. After watching this channel for about an hour I heard the beginning of a song called "Leih Beydary Keda" with a stunning looking young woman called Ruby. I had heard of her from people such as one of my cousins, also named Ruby. I remember her asking me if I knew of the singer Ruby and when I looked puzzled she stuck her butt out and started to belly-dance. Wonderful depiction . . . When the song was over I was completely bedazzled. I had heard there was a lot of controversy about this singer and from that video I had no idea why. I though, maybe it was one of her more sober videos (after watching her other two videos I couldn't be more right). Sure, she stuck her butt out and smacked it. Sure, she wore a rather skimpy outfit while sticking her butt out to "exercise". I could see why this could be considered bad . . . after all this is a Muslim country. People have the right to be mad but I also thought about one thing : How does Ruby compare to all American women artists? After watching "Baby Boy" by Beyonce and "Just Like a Pill" by Pink, Ruby looked like an innocent school girl. These songs also play on Melody and I didn't hear any women yelling to get those off of the channel. Is it just because she's Egyptian? Everyone has their opinion but mine stands clear; Ruby has the right to do anything she wants and we can not stop her. It his her own choice not ours. Mennah
