One Moment More

I originally saw this artist covering Jolene on a video from the Dolly Parton tirbute "Just Because I'm a Woman", and got to hear her live as the opening act at a Nickel Creek concert in Buies' Creek, NC. After trying without much success to find this album in stores, I finally ordered a copy online. The artist passed up mainstream labels in favor of a small independant label - although that means less exposure, it gave her greater creative freedom in producing an album which successfully blends folk, gospel, country, and pop. Mindy Smith is gifted with a tremendous ability to convey emotion in her words and voice, and nowhere is this more evident than on the title track, "One Moment More", a song about loss made very personal by the loss of her mother. A supply of tissue is recomended when listening to this one. The other songs mostly focus on spirituality, love, and personal struggles. "Come To Jesus" is a powerful gospel song which is moving without being so forceful as to push the listener away. "Raggedy Ann" is a remincence of childhood with more of a folk feel to it, and "Fighting For It All" is an upbeat song about life's struggles. The only song on the album not written by Smith is a special treat: A hidden track with a cover version of "Jolene" featuring an appearance by Dolly herself on background vocals. The bonus track alone is worth the effort needed to find a copy, and the remainder of the album is no less impressive.
